USU gymnasts break funk, rout UCSB

Utah State's women's gymnastics team broke out of a three-meet losing streak in a big way, coming up with a 194.100-184.450 win over Big West rival UC Santa Barbara Friday night.

The score is the highest for the Aggies this season. Sophomore Christy Denson won her fourth all-around title of the season for Utah State, scoring a 38.875 to help lead the Aggies to the win in front of 1,687 fans in Logan.Utah State took advantage of a poor start by UC Santa Barbara on the uneven bars, jumping out to an early 2.875-point lead with a slid performance on vault. Led by Amber Jamison's 9.675, the Aggies posted a 47.750 while the Gauchos struggled on the bars, getting only two scores above a 9.000 to score a 44.875.

It was more of the same in the second rotation. With the Aggies getting career-high scores from Krissy Richards (9.750), Lyndsey Gaustad (9.825), Melissa Kilpatrick (9.825), and Emily Swank (9.850) to go along with a 9.850 by Christy Denson, Utah State put up a 49.100, the second-highest score on bars for an Aggie team. UCSB faired better on vault, scoring a 45.875, but it was not enough to keep up with USU.

Utah State continued to cruise on beam, setting even more career-bests. Kilpatrick (9.775), and Jamison (9.775) had the career-highs, while Kerry Griggers set the pace for the Aggies with a 9.875.
