Children could get a taste of filmmaking in school

Is the next Steven Spielberg a student at a Utah public school?

Sen. Craig Peterson, R-Orem, wants to tap the creative juices of Utah schoolchildren by developing a four-credit film and video art curriculum.Peterson is seeking $100,000 for the Utah State Office of Education and the Utah Arts Council to develop curricula and help purchase related technology.

Peterson said he got the idea after watching his son and his teenage friends develop a video that Peterson's son used to invite a young woman on a date. What to the young men was a stunt was in reality a lesson in language, math and technology.

To illustrate his point Friday morning, Peterson showed the Senate Education Committee a brief documentary on Crypto-Jews in northern New Mexico.

The committee voted to forward SB199 to the Senate.
