W. Illinois prevails in overtime against Southern Utah, 77-73

Brad Froman scored six points in overtime including a layup with 31 seconds left to give Western Illinois a hard-fought 77-73 win over Southern Utah in the Centrum Saturday night.

SUU's Jason Essex forced the extra period with an 18-foot jumper with 16 seconds left and then helped the 'Birds to a 73-70 overtime lead on an 8-footer with 2:04 remaining in the extra period. After SUU moved up by three, WIU's Shawn Doles, who led all scorers with 22 points, nailed a three-pointer to tie the game with 1:24 left and to set up Froman's game-winning layup.

"We had a lot of execution breakdowns at the end of regulation and in overtime and they took advantage of their opportunities," said SUU coach Bill Evans. "Froman made some big plays and handled every adjustment we made."

Froman finished with 16 points in 20 minutes. SUU was led by Tarvish Felton's 18. Essex scored 13 in his final game in Cedar City.

"I thought we played well at times, but against a disciplined club like Western you have to play well the whole game," said Evans.

The win moves WIU to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in Mid-Con play. SUU falls to 6-17, 3-10.
