Man fleeing accident jumps from an overpass on I-80

A man fleeing the scene of an accident was injured when he jumped from an I-80 overpass Saturday.

The man, who police believe is an illegal alien, fell about 10 feet before striking a concrete embankment after the fall, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Verdi White. Paramedics took the man to Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries.Police believe the man, 27, was driving the vehicle that crashed into the back of a car stopped for a traffic light on the I-80 eastbound off-ramp at Redwood Road about 5:30 p.m. A man and a woman abandoned the car and ran in different directions. The driver of the other car was uninjured, White said.

Salt Lake Police officers spotted the man running east on I-80, White said. After a brief foot chase, the man jumped from the overpass located at about 1500 West.

Troopers found a open container of alcohol and a loaded handgun in the car at the accident scene, White said. The injured man was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Officers hadn't found the woman by Saturday evening.
