Senators vote to outlaw parking near any crosswalk

The Senate voted unanimously Friday to send to the House a bill that outlaws parking within 20 feet of any pedestrian crosswalk.

State law now prohibits parking within 20 feet of crosswalks at intersections but allows parking near crosswalks in the middle of streets.Sen. David Buhler, R-Salt Lake City, is sponsoring SB106 on behalf of students at Dilworth Elementary School.

The third-graders came up with the idea after a 10-year-old boy was hit by a car and severely injured while riding his bike in the midstreet crosswalk outside the school.
