Turning inmates into bakers saves jail $400 per month

The Lawrence County Jail was under fire for spending too much dough on bread. It now has inmates kneading their own.

Controller Mary Ann Reiter criticized Warden William Hall for spending 80 cents per loaf from a wholesale vendor - 20 cents more than some groceries charge.Hall then turned inmates into bakers, and the jail has cut its $1,400 monthly bread cost by $400. Inmates are baking bread for breakfast and dinner every other day.

The jail will buy hamburger, hot dog and submarine buns from vendors for now, but officials are considering making all baked goods at the jail to save $1,200 a month.
