Mayor going to Nagano to check out hockey site

Mayor Lewis Billings is going to Nagano this week to get a firsthand look at the Olympics.

Billings intends to spend the week observing hockey venue operations and meeting with Olympic and city officials.Provo will be one of three sites to host hockey games during the 2002 Winter Games. An 8,500-seat arena is under construction at Seven Peaks Water Park.

Billings, chairman of the Provo City/Utah County Ice Sheet Authority, hopes to bring back information that will help the city, county and Seven Peaks stage an Olympic event.

Billings said the trip is not at taxpayers' expense. He raised part of the estimated $6,000 cost and contributed some from his own pocket.
