Central City man charged in shootout at restaurant

A Central City man has been charged in connection with a restaurant shootout that left a man seriously injured earlier this month.

Alfonso Joe Alvarez, 19, was charged in 3rd District Court Wednesday with first-degree felony aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping, and second-degree felony aggravated assault. He is being held at the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.According to the charges, on Feb. 4 Anthony Russo and Val Gotberg were working at Trucker's Cafe, 1423 S. 300 West, when four men came in and ordered drinks. The men then pulled out guns and told Russo and Gotberg to get on the ground.

One of the men took Gotberg to a back room and taped his hands behind his back, the charges state.

Police said Russo pulled out a gun and was shot in the leg during the shootout that ensued.

"One of the men then grabbed money out of Russo's shirt pocket (and) Russo was then shot in the abdomen," the charges state. While leaving the restaurant, one of the men shot Russo again in the abdomen.

Russo was taken to LDS Hospital for treatment.

Russo and Gotberg later picked Alvarez out of a photo lineup as one of the men who entered the cafe and participated in the robbery, the charges state.
