A man accused of raping three women over a six-month period last year has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

Shane A. Baumgart, 21, West Valley City, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of aggravated kidnapping, all first-degree felonies, before 3rd District Judge William Bohling last week. In exchange, prosecutors dropped 10 additional counts of aggravated sexual assault.Baumgart agreed to the plea bargain after he was found competent to stand trial last month. He waived a preliminary hearing and pleaded guilty during his arraignment Feb. 9.

Each of the charges carry a possible five-years-to-life prison term.

Baumgart allegedly met the victims on three separate occasions.

On April 16, an 18-year-old woman told police she was with Baumgart in his truck near Magna when he choked her nearly unconscious and then sexually assaulted her.

On Aug. 22, Baumgart offered a 26-year-old woman a ride while she was walking to work near 5800 West and 4700 South. The woman accepted, but instead of taking her to work, Baumgart drove her a few blocks and sexually assaulted her.

Two months later, A 20-year-old woman told authorities Baumgart lured her out of a Murray fast-food restaurant where she worked. Once outside, prosecutors say Baumgart forced the woman into his vehicle with a gun, drove her away from the restaurant and raped her.

Baumgart is scheduled for sentencing March 23. He remains at the Salt Lake County Jail on $250,000 bond.
