NBA FINES HAMMONDS: Tom Hammonds of the Minnesota Timberwolves was fined $7,500 by the NBA on Friday for a flagrant foul earlier this week against Orlando's Derek Harper.

The play occurred in the Magic's 115-102 win over the Tim-ber-wolves on Wednesday night, when Hammonds clotheslined Harper as he drove for the basket with 3:06 left in the third period.Harper was carried off on a stretcher by paramedics and, as a precaution, taken to the hospital.

REF PLEADS GUILTY: The last of four NBA referees indicted in an airline ticket scam pleaded guilty Friday to tax evasion.

Mike Mathis, 54, was charged with understating income by $69,000 from 1989 through 1992. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of filing a false tax return in 1992 and immediately resigned from the league.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my nearly 22 years of employment as a referee with the NBA," Mathis said in a statement released by his lawyer, Terrence Grady. "And while I understand the difficult position the NBA is facing in this matter, it is my hope to resume my career with them at some point."

SURGERY FOR WILLIAMS: Forward Buck Williams of the New York Knicks underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday, and was placed on injured reserve.

Williams' role with the Knicks is expected to be filled by Terry Cummings, obtained Thursday in a trade with Philadelphia.

RAUF GOES ON INJURED LIST: The Sacramento Kings put guard Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf on the injured list Friday with the flu.

The Kings activated forward Lawrence Funderburke from the injured list to replace Abdul-Rauf, who will miss at least five games. Abdul-Rauf was averaging 7.3 points and 1.2 rebounds in 31 games this season.

Also on Friday, the Kings waived swingman Kevin Gamble and center Kevin Salvadori.

WEST REPORTS TO GRIZZLIES: Doug West reported to the Vancouver Grizzlies on Friday, but the team was waiting for him to pass his physical before the trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves was official.

West, traded for Anthony Peeler on Thursday, reported to the Grizzlies right before tipoff of their game Friday night against Atlanta.
