Caption only: Bennion students prepare for disaster

Students at Bennion Elementary School carry bins filled with emergency items they collected as part of the Community Emergency Response Team program. The students, along with their parents, collected items from five categories: medical supplies, sundries, clerical supplies, hardware and miscellaneous. CERT's purpose is to provide private citizens with the basic skills they will need to handle virtually all of their own needs and then to respond to their community needs in the first 72 hours following a disaster when damaged roads, disrupted communications, high call volume, etc., may restrict access by professional emergency response teams. The course consists of 21 hours of training one night a week for seven weeks. Classes are taught by firefighters and paramedics.
