Chief resigns at Timp Cave for new job

Cordell J. Roy, Riverton, superintendent at Timpanogos Cave National Monument since June 1994, has been named to the same post at Chamizal National Memorial, El Paso, Texas, effective March 1.

Mike Gosse, Timpanogos Cave National Monument's chief ranger, will be acting superintendent until a new one is named. Roy said he doesn't know when that will be.A 22-year veteran of the National Park Service, Roy will succeed Bill Sontag, who has worked at Chamizal six years and is now superintendent at Amistad National Recreation Area in Del Rio, Texas.

Chamizal is a peaceful settlement of a 99-year boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico. Signed in 1963, the Chamizal Treaty ended the dispute, according to a park service press release.

Roy began his federal government career in 1972 as a seasonal park ranger at Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California. He worked from 1980 to 1983 at Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. For the past two years he was chairman of the board of directors, Utah Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau.
