Utah

SOFTBALL: Eighteenth-ranked Utah went 2-3 at the UNLV Softball Classic this weekend at Sunset Park in Las Vegas.

Utah concluded the tournament with a 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount on Sunday. The Utes scored three runs on five hits and committed one error. Loyola Marymount had two runs on four hits. Sunny Smith delivered with a double and Lisa Hashimoto ripped a triple to lead Utah at the plate. Pitcher Kristin Arbogast evened her record at 2-2 with the win, surrendering one earned run and three hits in four innings. Sarah Farnworth gave up just one hit in three innings of relier.

MEN'S TENNIS: The Utes extended their winning streak to three with a victory over St. Mary's College on Sunday in Moraga, Calif. The Utes won six of seven matches to claim their first road win of the season.

In singles play, Utah's No. 1 through No. 4 seeds all came away victorious. No. 1 singles seed Paul McPherson defeated Rex Calaunan, 7-5, 6-3 followed by No. 2 Ben Coates, who downed Matt Hibbard, 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 3 position, Phil Rodrigue handled Tomas Felipcik, 7-6, 7-6. followed by No. 4 Alex Buxton's victory over Casey Kohlhoff, 6-3. 7-6. St. Mary's picked up its only point of the match with Eric Hom's defeat of Utah's No. 5 seeded Ryan Snow, 7-6, 7-6. In the final singles match of the afternoon, No. 6 Ute Adam Eke defeated Hiroo Sumida, 6-2. 6-2.

In doubles play, Utah won two of three matches. Utah's duo of Coates and Rodrigue downed Calaunan and Filipcik 8-0, and Utah's Snow and McPherson defeated Kohlhoff and Hibbard, 8-3.

Brigham Young

WRESTLING: BYU grapplers won their final dual meet of the season 19-13 against the Air Force Academy Saturday night in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Jose Enriquez and senior John Kelly both had wins to give the Cougars an early 7-0 lead. Jason Johnson clinched the Cougar victory with an exciting 7-4 win over Air Force's Justin Bowen. This was Johnson's first action since suffering a concussion three weeks ago.

The Cougars finished this season 8-7.

Southern Utah

TRACK & FIELD: At Macomb, Ill., SUU's Kris Watson qualified nationally in the weight throw, the second athlete from SUU to accomplish this feat. Watson, a junior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, finished first in the weight throw with a mark of 64-10.

The women's track team also had a big accomplishment, winning the school's first-ever Mid-Continent Conference championship in any sport. The women came back from a 13-point deficit to claim the title. The women were led by first-place finishers Kathryn Henrie in the mile (5:05.63); Shelly Richards, who set a Mid-Con indoor record in the 55-meter hurdles (8.19); and Louize Elison, in the shot put (42-10 1/4).
