I read, in last Sunday's newspaper, that the governor said that there is a good possibility that tax money will need to be spent to fund the 2002 Olympic Games. I then heard, on a local radio station, that the governor is denying that he said any such thing. My question is: Who is lying to us?
Originally, we were told that no tax money would be spent for the Games and that funding would come from private sources. Shortly after, $59 million of tax money was spent. Again, who is lying to us? Is it the governor, the SLOC, the Legislature, the Deseret News or all of the above? This deception is not limited to the Olympic Games. We are being lied to about I-15 reconstruction and light rail as well.
We are told that there is not enough money to complete I-15 and that the U.S. Congress may or may not fund what is left. So, how do we finish the job? Tax increases.
We are told that light rail will cost more than originally estimated. The majority of Utahns did not and do not want light rail, and it was shoved down our throats by Salt Lake Mayor Deedee Corradini and UTA so that they would be looked upon as progressive and politically correct. So, how do we complete the job? Tax increases.
Utah citizens are being taken to the cleaners. The Deseret News is in a position to publicly hold these people's feet to the fire and make them accountable for their public trust. We taxpayers would very much like to see this happen.
