Howard Tennant Reid, 81, of Orem, died Sunday, February 22, 1998 at his home.
He was born November 16, 1916 in Manti, Sanpete County, Utah, a son of John Carter and Margaret Tennant Reid. He married Dorothy Pederson, July 25, 1946 in the Manti LDS Temple.He was raised in Manti, graduating from Manti High School. He graduated from Snow College in 1937 in the field of music receiving the Brass Music Award. He received his BA in music and English from Brigham Young University in 1940. He taught at Clearfield, Utah for a short time before enlisting in the United States Navy. He served four years as an officer during World War II.
He did his graduate work at the University of Southern California receiving his MS in education and an Ed.D. in guidance and counseling psychology. He accepted a position as Dean of Men and Assistant Professor of Education at Colorado State College of Education in Greely, Colorado. He joined the faculty at Brigham Young University in 1953 where he remained for 29 years. He retired in 1982. One of the three years of leave was spent as Dean of Students at the America University in Cairo, Egypt.
Howard was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had served in various positions including branch presidency, Denver District president, high councilman and bishop. His interests and hobbies include church activities, temple assignments and time spent with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Orem; his children, Jeri Lynne (Roylen) Griffin, American Fork; Maj. H. Alan (Pamela) Reid, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Sheryl Ann (Steven) Wilson, Kingman, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth R. Lund. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Charles, Tom, Wayne, and baby sister, Alice.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 26th, at 11 a.m. in the Cascade 4th Ward, 1051 East 200 North, Orem. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem, and Thursday at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the East Lawn Memorial Hills Cemetery, Provo, with full military rites conducted by VFW District #4.
