It's now legal to construct nine-story buildings in the city, thanks to a new zoning ordinance amendment approved by the City Council.
Anticipating a nine-story hotel with the proposed Davis County Convention and Conference Center in Layton, the council approved a new maximum building height of 120 feet. The previous height allowable was 60 feet, or about five stories. The ordinance revision also changed the setback for multifamily and commercial developments from 35 to 20 feet. However, the setback from single family to commercial remains at 35 feet - as a fixed buffer.
The City Council also approved revisions in its municipal code for animal control.
City attorney Gary Crane said those changes mean the city and Davis County now have an ordinance on animal control that's 99 percent compatible.
