For 37 years, Utah high school seniors have been gaining public recognition for their outstanding scholarship, leadership and citizenship accomplishments through the Sterling Scholar awards. More than 19,000 students have been recognized over the years, with more than 1,200 receiving highest honors and cash awards, as well as tuition scholarships.

For the 1998 Wasatch Front program, one winner in each of 12 categories will receive a cash award of $1,000 and two runners-up in each category will each receive $250. Plus, the General Scholarship winner, selected from among the 12 winners, receives an additional $2,500.In addition to the nearly $20,000 in cash awards, 15 institutions of higher education will provide approximately $70,000 in scholarships and tuition waivers to Sterling Scholar winners and runners-up in all five Sterling Scholar regions.

The following are participating institutions and the awards they offer: Brigham Young University, Provo. One-year (two semesters) full LDS tuition scholarships to all winners and one-year (two semesters) half LDS tuition scholarship to all runners-up, contingent upon admission to BYU by the appropriate deadline and good academic standing.

Utah Career College, Salt Lake City. Scholarship of full tuition to all winners and runners-up for one academic program valued at an average of $8,500. This scholarship may be added to other awards.

College of Eastern Utah, Price. A two-year, full-tuition waiver and Sessions Honor Hall Housing Scholarship to all winners, valued at $3,711.

Also, a two-year, full-tuition waiver valued at $2,000 to all Sterling Scholars named from their high school. Tuition waivers contingent upon recipients maintaining 15 credit hours per semester and a 3.0 quarterly GPA.

Dixie College, St. George. One-year, full-tuition scholarship offered to all winners, valued at 1,372; and a half-tuition scholarship offered to runners-up, valued at $686. Scholarships are renewable sophomore year if students apply and meet eligibility requirements.

LDS Business College, Salt Lake City. One-year full tuition to winners valued at $2,010 and one-half tuition to runners-up valued at $1,005. Also, full tuition to runners-up in Business & Marketing education.

Ricks College, Rexburg, Idaho. Full-tuition scholarships offered to all winners and runners-up for one year, valued at $2,000.

Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City. Full-tuition scholarship (12 to 18 credit hours maximum) for two semesters in an eligible program offered to winners, runners-up and finalists in each category, valued at $1,239.

Recipient must enroll as full-time student and pay individual fees.

Scholarship may be added to other awards.

Snow College, Ephraim. One-year tuition scholarship to winners and runners-up, valued at $984. Fees are not included.

Southern Utah University, Cedar City. Regional winners will receive a full-tuition scholarship for the first year if a 3.5 GPA is maintained. All applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.5 and an ACT score of no less than 25. Scholarships are renewable. The recipient must maintain a 3.9 GPA for a full tuition and a 3.7 GPA for a half tuition to receive the scholarship for the remaining years.

Stevens-Henager College of Business, Provo. Partial tuition scholarship for all high school nominees for either the 10-month diploma or associate degree, valued at $4,000.

University of Utah, Salt Lake City. A one-year (two semesters) tuition waiver valued at approximately $2,500 to all winners. Recipients are responsible for individual fees and must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester. Students are invited to apply for departmental scholarships.

Utah State University, Logan. Winners will be awarded one year of tuition.

Runners-up will receive half tuition. The scholarships are renewable at the resident rate (tuition only) for the sophomore year, if the students maintain a 3.80 cumulative GPA, or half tuition if they maintain a 3.7 GPA during their freshman year. To renew scholarship, students must reapply in the Financial Aid Office by March 1, 1999.

Utah Valley State College, Orem. A one-year, full-tuition scholarship (fees not included) to winners (one-half tuition scholarship to all runners-up). Similar awards are available to winners at the high school level. Award is contingent upon scholarship application and admission to UVSC by February 1. Recipients must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.5 and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 while attending UVSC.

Weber State University, Ogden. A one-year, full-tuition waiver scholarship to each winner, valued at $1,518. A one-year, half-tuition waiver scholarship to each runner-up valued at $759. Scholarship is non-renewable, and recipient must maintain 3.5 GPA.

Westminster College, Salt Lake City. Renewable full-tuition scholarship to all winners, valued at $10,976. Renewable half-tuition scholarships to all runners-up, valued at $5,488 and renewable one-semester tuition scholarship to all finalists valued at $2,744. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to renew the scholarship for up to four years. Full-time enrollment is required.
