Provo Board of Education President Gerald Williams has announced his resignation, effective March 5.

Williams has been called by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to serve as a mission president.A school district spokeswoman said Williams, a Brigham Young University law professor, and his wife, both fluent in French, will preside over a French-speaking mission. The mission hasn't been announced.

Williams' seat is up for re-election this year, but the board must appoint a replacement by April 5 or the City Council will do so, said Superintendent Michael Jacobsen. The board can decide on a replacement between March 3 and April 4 without involving the City Council, he said. The filing period for the seat begins March 9.
