It was bombs away Tuesday night at the 4A girls state basketball tournament as Kristi Fehr, Lindsey Hille and Lesley Shaw put on a 3-point shooting clinic that would make Jeff Hornacek proud.
Fehr and Hille of Olympus combined to hit 11 3-pointers, while Weber's Shaw tied the state record for the second time this season with seven treys. The Fehr/Hille combo proved too much for the Warriors, however, as the top-ranked Titans pulled away in the second half for a 65-48 victory.
The win extended Olympus' win streak to 20 games and moved the Titans into a semifinal matchup Thursday at SLCC's Redwood Road campus with second-ranked Timpview, a 73-58 winner over Logan. The other semifinal pits Lone Peak against Murray.
Olympus hit 7-of-12 3-pointers in the first half and finished 11-for-25 for the game. In fact, the Titans only had two more 2-point shots than 3s.
"We were extremely prepared for (Oly's 3-point shooting), we just didn't extend our zone out as far as we needed to make them put the ball on the floor," said Weber coach Dave Wallace. "We did a better job of that in the second half."
Fehr and Hille finished with 21 and 22 points for the Titans and combined to score 22 of Oly's 24 first-quarter points. The Titans held a 38-21 lead with just over two minutes left in the second quarter before Shaw went to work.
The senior guard hit three 3s during that time as the Warriors closed with a 13-0 run to cut their halftime deficit to just 38-34.
Shaw led the 3-point contest at halftime with six, while Fehr had five and Hille had two.
Olympus coach Devon Hartley had seen enough of Shaw's work and went to a box-and-one defense in the second half.
"We put a girl on (Shaw) and didn't have her drop off for help defense at all," Hartley said. "(Shaw) was their savior in the first half . . . what a great athlete."
Shaw finished with 25 points, but only had five in the second half as the Warriors managed just 14 as a team.
Weber trailed 46-41 late in the third quarter, but Olympus used a 10-0 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.
"I don't feel we played as physical as we needed to on the low block to create our offense," Wallace said. "Part of it is that Olympus has been here, and we haven't, and it showed. That's why they're the champs until somebody beats them."
In Tuesday's other games:
TIMPVIEW 73, LOGAN 58: Camille Freeze burned the nets for a game-high 28 points, and the Thunderbirds held a double-digit lead for most of the game in their win over the Grizzlies.
Caprice Clark added 16 points and Ruth Donaldson 13 more for Timpview, but it was Freeze who toasted Logan from all over the court.
"She went outside, inside and made good passes," Timpview coach Barbara Dickson said of Freeze. "She did what she can do and should do."
Kensie Nyman had 13 points to lead Logan.
MURRAY 59, BOUNTIFUL 52: The Spartans won the season series 2-1 against their Region 5 rivals but more importantly moved onto the semifinals with the victory.
Jessica Dietlein tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds and Lindy Whitley added 18 points for Murray, which was blasted by Bountiful the last time the two teams met.
"I think we were a little down the last time we played them, and they were playing well," said Murray coach Lisa White. "We really concentrated on taking (the inside play) out of their game."
Bountiful's Hailey MacKay had a big outing her last game against the Spartans, but was limited to 13 points this time as the Braves shot a collective 31 percent from the floor.
LONE PEAK 46, CYPRUS 32: The third-ranked Knights scored on their first five possessions of the game en route to a comfortable win over the Pirates and a semifinal meeting with Murray.
Kristie Ferguson had 10 points and Lindsay Doxey added nine points and 10 rebounds for Lone Peak, which held Cyprus' leading scorer Katrena Ellett to just nine points.
"That was incredible defense on Katrena," said Lone Peak head coach Shauna Kay. "She can score 50 on you with her eyes closed."
It wasn't all good news for the Knights, who lost guard Amber Harr for the rest of the tournament with a knee injury.
"We can't replace her," added Kay. "We've got to have people step it up."
