Karl Malone may be the "mailman" for his basketball deliveries. But the U.S. House voted Wednesday to honor legislative deliveries by former Rep. Howard Nielson, R-Utah, by naming the entire downtown Provo Post Office for him.
That came in a voice vote on a bill by Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, to honor Nielson, who is now a member of the Utah Senate.Cannon said Nielson is "an honorable man, a good friend, and in the words of Doris Wilson, a former staffer, `Howard was a model of what the founding fathers envisioned legislative leaders to be. Both sides of the aisle respect his integrity and willingness to make the tough decisions with fairness to everyone.' "
House Majority Leader Dick Army also said Nielson "was a dedicated public servant and a great leader in Congress."
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Nielson served four terms in Congress from 1983 to 1991.
Earlier, he was speaker of the Utah House of Representatives. After he retired from Congress, he and his wife served as LDS missionaries in Australia and Hungary before he decided to re-enter politics again as a state senator.
