A Cambodian emigre who implicated three men in the killing of Oscar-winning actor Haing Ngor recanted his story at their trial, suggesting police prodded him into identifying the defendants.
"I did not see those people so I could not point them out," said Vireak Sirik, speaking through a Cambodian translator Tuesday. He also denied his previous account of hearing gunshots the night that Ngor was shot to death in an alley outside his apartment.
Jurors for the three defendants then heard a tape recording of Sirik's March 21, 1996, interview with police in which he said in clear English that he heard two shots in the alley where Ngor was killed and saw "three guys" running from the scene.
