Clark D. Webb has been appointed director of Brigham Young University's Freshman Academy.

Webb replaces Joseph C. Free, who retired and is serving a mission in Rochester, N.Y., for the LDS Church. The appointment is effective immediately.The Freshman Academy began in 1993 as the Student Housing Initiatives in Education (SHINE) to provide entering students with a better educational experience. Now called the Freshman Academy, the program brings students together in small communities that participate in many of the same activities, including classes, church services and social events.

Webb is a senior faculty member in the department of educational leadership and foundations at the David O. McKay School of Education and has been a member of the BYU faculty since 1966.

He has been a consultant for the LDS Church Education System for its high school in Mexico City and is the author of two books, "Local Schools of Thought" and "What Every Teacher Knows."

A BYU alumnus, Webb received his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin.
