Michael Stewart, a former Salt Lake County commissioner, has been called to serve as a mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Stewart, 58, was a three-term commissioner from 1980 to 1992, when he ran for governor. A Salt Lake native, he is currently a leadership consultant.He will attend a mission presidents seminar in June, and assume his new responsibilities on July 1, serving for three years. Where he's going will be announced later, according to a church spokesman.
