Sixth member of Utah family dies from Feb. 20 crash

A California crash involving a large Utah family traveling in a motor home Feb. 20 near Barstow has claimed a sixth individual.

RuthAnn Dinkelman, 36, Wellington, Carbon County, died at 6:53 a.m. Thursday in a surgical intensive care unit at San Bernadino County Medical Center, according to the nursing administration office.The woman's husband, Jay, 38, who was injured in the same accident, was released Thursday from the same hospital.

Meanwhile, two other Utahns in the extended family, Gary Atwood, 43, and his wife, Patricia (Tricia) Atwood, 38, of Price, remained in another California hospital. They were both in serious condition but out of intensive care and improving Friday morning at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Five other family members also riding in the motor home died at the accident scene. They are Clemont Atwood, 75, and his wife, Marcella, 62, of Hurricane, Washington County; a daughter, Cleora Clark, 50, Wellington; Karen Jewkes, 55; and her husband Joseph Jewkes Jr., 59, both of Sandy. All the women who died are daughters of Clemont Atwood and a wife by a previous marriage, the late Leora Atwood.
