Clippers 111, Jazz 102
Game 45: Tuesday at the Arrowhead Pond1st 2nd 3rd 4th
Jazz 23 17 37 25 - 102
Clippers 26 29 27 29 - 111
1st quarter: Eric Piatkowski, doing his best MJ impersonation, goes off for 12 points as Clips jump out to a lead of as many as eight. L.A. outrebounds Utah 14-7.
2nd quarter: The Clippers keep pouring it on. They open the quarter with an 18-4 run to take a 44-27 advantage. James Robinson comes off the bench to score 11 points.
3rd quarter: Utah falls behind by 21 early in the quarter before the Jazz guards lead a rally. Jeff Hornacek, John Stockton and Howard Eisley combine for 28 points.
4th quarter: Each time the Jazz cut into the lead, the Clippers answer. Robinson is the biggest thorn in Utah's side, scoring 11.
Who's hot: Hornacek entered the game third in both free-throw and 3-point accuracy. He did nothing to change that on Tuesday, going 6 for 6 from the foul line and 2 for 4 from beyond the arc.
Key to the game: Rebounding. The Clippers out-rebounded the Jazz 43-26. They pulled down 16 offensive boards to Utah's 6, outscoring the Jazz 17-4 on second-chance points.
Records: Jazz 30-15; Clippers 11-36
Quotable: "These guys are getting paid money to play basketball. They're killing this game when they play like that. People aren't going to want to watch that. They want to watch people compete." - Jazz coach Jerry Sloan on his team's effort Tuesday.
Notable: It took Clippers coach Bill Fitch nine tries, but he finally caught up to Red Auerbach for the second most wins in NBA history with 938. Fitch was stuck on win No. 937 during L.A.'s recent eight-game losing streak . . . Malone pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. He needs four in Wednesday's game against the Bulls for an even 11,000 for his career. Malone was 6 of 10 from the foul line on Tuesday. He needs five more attempts to pass former Jazzman Adrian Dantley for fifth on the all-time list for free-throw attempts. He's attempted 6,827 during his career . . . Malone made his first 3-point shot of the season late in the game. He was 0-for-1 from beyond the arc entering the game . . . Utah is now just 5-10 against teams from the Pacific Division.
Next Up: Chicago Bulls vs. Jazz, tonight, 6 p.m. at the Delta Center.
