Death: Phyllis Shelby Gibson

Phyllis Shelby Gibson, age 85, passed away Monday, February 2, 1998 with her family by her side at Ogden Regional Medical Center, following a long illness.

She was born July 5, 1912 in Kaysville, Utah to Leroy and Vilate McKinnon Shelby. After graduating from high school in Salt Lake, she entered the Nurses Training School at Thomas Dee Hospital in Ogden, where her sister, Elaine, was already trained. Both enjoyed successful careers for many years in the Ogden and Salt Lake City areas. Much later, Phyllis worked as a public school nurse. In 1936, she married Alfred Mark Brim in Los Angeles. He died in 1943. They had two children, Robert Mark Brim (surviving) and Virginia Elaine Brim, who died as a three year old. In 1945, she married Fred Scott Wilkinson, by whom she had a daughter, Kathleen (surviving). She then married John J. Gibson. She will rest with him in the Shelby family plot. They had no children. Phyllis has been an active member of the Ogden Federation of the Blind, where she held an office. Her artistic work in ceramics is outstanding.Preceding her in death were Elaine Shelby Ward Aller, and a brother, Robert Leroy Shelby of Oregon. Their sister, Frances Shelby Beniams of El Cerrito, California, survives them. Also surviving is a son-in-law, Richard L. Ballantyne, Ogden. She will be sorely missed by five grandchildren, Mary, Patty, Stacey, Jennifer, Robby, and seven great-grandchildren, as well as by her family and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 6, 1:30 p.m. at Leavitt's Chapel of Flowers Mortuary, 836 36th Street, Ogden, where family and friends will be welcome to visit for an hour before the service, or at a viewing on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment, Leavitt's Aultorest Memorial Park, Ogden.
