For Carter, hospital stay was far from a rest stop

Jimmy Carter kept busy working on his 14th book - and working out - while he was hospitalized to treat a mysterious rash.

"They brought in a Stairmaster, computer and fax machine," said his wife, Rosalynn. The former president was being released from Atlanta's Emory University Hospital in Americus, Ga., Thursday and returning to the couple's home in Plains. Carter entered the hospital Sunday for treatment of a skin rash that's been bothering him for months.

"He's better," Rosalynn Carter said at Georgia Southwestern State University, where on Wednesday she accepted a $1.2 million gift to the Rosalynn Carter Institute, a mental health consortium.

She said her husband is working on a book tentatively titled "The Virtues of Aging."
