Mahe sinks Mtn. View with timely free throw

Don't look now, but the Brighton Bengals are back on top of Region 3.

Thanks to a last-second free throw by BYU-bound football star Reno Mahe, the Bengals earned a 55-54 victory over second-ranked Mountain View Wednesday night.Brighton, which had struggled for much of the season, improved to 8-8 overall and 5-3 in league play. The Bengals have won four in a row to move into a tie for the Region 3 lead with Jordan. Mountain View (11-4) dropped a half-game out at 4-3.

With the game tied at 54-all, Mahe was fouled with one second remaining. He missed the first shot but then drilled the second one to give the Bengals the victory.

Mahe finished with 17 points while sophomore Jess Pinegar topped Brighton with 21. Tim Henry scord 15 for the Bruins.

JORDAN 47, HILLCREST 38 (OT): The Beetdiggers outscored the Huskies 13-4 in overtime in the low-scoring affair. Patrick John led Jordan with 12 points.

TIMPANOGOS 63, ALTA 59: Paced by Golden Ingle's 18 points, the Timberwolves shocked the Hawks for a big region road win.

BONNEVILLE 45, ROY 43: The Lakers held on for a tight win over the Royals as Devin Jones led Bonneville with 11 points. Roy got 15 from Jamin Smith.

MTN. CREST 75, FREMONT 53: Tony Brown lit up the Silver Wolves for 27 points as the Mustangs cruised. The 'Stangs forced 21 turnovers while committing only six.

WEBER 68, BOX ELDER 63: The Warriors held on for a tough victory over the visiting Bees.

SKY VIEW 67, LOGAN 56: The Bobcats came out on top as Trevor Stokes and Chris Randall each scored 17. Jason Stephens kept it close for the Grizzlies by tossing in 20 points.

TIMPVIEW 77, SPRINGVILLE 61: Chad Jacobsen scored 20 points for the Red Devils but it wasn't enough as James Jackson and Troy Willardson combined for 28 to lead the Thunderbirds.

PROVO 90, PAYSON 61: Eric Jackson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 24 in the nation by the USA Today. Jake Chrisman added 18.

SPANISH FORK 70, PLEASANT GROVE 59: Darren Reid, Matt Hurst and Will Neves combined for 49 points as the Dons ran past the Vikings.

AMERICAN FORK 55, LONE PEAK 53: Blaine Durrant scored 18 points and John Schaak hit two free throws with five seconds left as the Cavemen knocked off the Knights.

REGION 8

EMERY 57, NORTH SANPETE 49: Ty Wakefield and Cam Bennett combined for 32 points. Troy Reese had 17 points for the Hawks.

RICHFIELD 54, DELTA 41: Tad Rawlins led the Wildcats with 15 points as Richfield shot 24 more free throws than the Rabbits.

REGION 9

CEDAR 65, HURRICANE 48: Regan Wilson ripped the Tigers for 24 points as the Redmen rolled to an easy road win. Alan Thornton scored 11 for Hurricane.

PINE VIEW 55, DIXIE 49: Wyatt Garrett's 23 points paced the Panthers past the Flyers. Dixie got 19 points from Coty Bundy.

REGION 10

UNION 68, UINTAH 54: Beau Hancock led the Cougars with 21 points as Union upended the rival Utes despite 20 points from Cory Kebert. The Cougars hit 23 of 25 free throws.

WASATCH 49, PARK CITY 37: Travis Vis-en-tin had 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Wasps beat the Miners. Nate Barker also added 16 points.

REGION 11

NORTH SEVIER 57, SOUTH SEVIER 45: Ameen Shaheen tossed in 25 points as North beat South in the battle for Sevier County. Lance Roberts had 14 points for the Wolves.

BEAVER 52, MILLARD 51: Mark Robinson had 13 points and Morty Marshall added a dozen for the Beavers.

KANAB 73, ENTERPRISE 61: The Buckaroos got 24 points from Jerron Glazier and Reuben Evans chipped in another 20.

REGION 12

GUNNISON 73, ST. JOSEPH 70: The Jayhawks, led by 24 points from Paul Velez, missed a last-second shot and a chance to upset the top-ranked Bulldogs. Aaron Hill and Rory Hansen scored 38 points for the Bulldogs.

GRANTSVILLE 63, MANTI 47: Spencer Allred had 20 points and Isaac Butler added 14 as the Cowboys thumped the Templars for a road win.

SOUTH SUMMIT 57, JUAB 54: Wildcat Jason Duncan scored 21 and Rich Goats hit a trey with 20 seconds to play to upend the Wasps who got 20 from Josh Park.

ROWLAND HALL 77, NORTH SUMMIT 70 : Mike Stewart's three-pointer sent the game to overtime and Andy Lawrence hit 5 of 6 free throws in the extra period to give the Winged Lions the win.

REGION 14

S.L. LUTHERAN 77, S.L. CHRISTIAN 35: Landon Gobleman scored 24 points and Jay Cranney added another 18 as S.L. Lutheran hammered the Dragonslayers.

WATERFORD 60, MOUNT VERNON 46: The Wolves got 16 points form Jeremy Pendleton and 14 from Nate Bullen to stay in front.

DUGWAY 81, WENDOVER 63: The Mustangs cruised thanks to 22 points from Josh Johns and 16 from Brad Wyatt. Wendover was led by Travis Grossman's 16 points.

NONREGION

OLYMPUS 75, TOOELE 54: John Hille and Chad Grundy scored 18 and 14 points, respectively, as the Titans slew the Buffalos in a nonregion road game.

TABIONA 87, ALTAMONT 62: Uinta Basin neighbors battled and the Tigers, with 26 points from Levi Gines and 23 from Brett Giles, beat the Longhorns.

LEHI 76, BEAR RIVER 53: No. 1 met No. 2 in Lehi and the Pioneers came out on top as Andy Hadfield scored 20 points and Braden Cooper added 18 to beat the Bears.
