Coast Guard Academy leader to punish, not expel, cadets

The Coast Guard Academy's commandant has decided not to expel 33 cadets after an investigation into whether they cheated in filling out their training workbooks.

The decision Wednesday from the commandant, Capt. Gene Brooks, came after the cadets testified at hearings last week. All 33 face punishments ranging from demerits to extra work. The investigation began in September after the discovery of similar responses in workbooks the cadets filled out during summer training missions aboard Coast Guard cutters.
