The chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Gov. Roy Romer, has acknowledged having a "relationship" with a woman who was his top aide in Colorado before working with him at the DNC.
Romer, 69, publicly denied during campaigns in 1990 and 1994 any sort of relationship with Betty Jane Thornberry, 51, who is divorced. However, he talked with the Denver Post and issued a statement through spokesman Jim Carpenter to the Rocky Mountain News on Thursday, hours after Insight magazine published an Internet story saying it had videotapes showing Romer hugging and kissing Thornberry in 1995.
"My relationship with B.J. Thornberry is a longstanding one, which my family is fully aware of and understands," Romer said through Carpenter. "I ask people to respect our private lives."
