N.Y. cabs accidents, injuries rising, 2 newspapers report

At the same time the city's crime rate is dropping, its taxis seem to be getting more dangerous.

Cab accidents have jumped more than 40 percent this decade and injuries have increased nearly two-thirds, The New York Times and the Daily News reported Saturday.During the same period, accidents involving other vehicles declined.

Taxi-related injuries increased 64 percent from 1991 to 1996, the Daily News reported, citing state Department of Motor Vehicle statistics. The number of deaths from those accidents has remained around 30 a year.
