Mascots battle on UVSC court

Forget Karl Malone. Bring on Doodles the Chicken.

The Chick-Fil-A mascot dominated other caricature hoopsters during a five-minute exhibition basketball game Saturday night during halftime at Utah Valley State College's homecoming matchup with Salt Lake Community College.UVSC's homecoming week is held during basketball season because the Orem school doesn't have a football team. To cap the celebration, UVSC downed the SLCC Bruins, 82-73.

During the halftime entertainment, Doodles, who scored four of the 10 total points, was joined on the court by McGruff the Crime Dog, Slice from Papa Murphy's Pizza, Fire Safety Dog Sparky and the Crash Test Dummies. They competed against Winder Dairy's Cow Patty, Chuck E. Cheese, Sharky from Seven Peaks water resort and Daisy and Sunny from Days Inn.

Ronald McDonald handled the play-by-play commentary. Buzz from the Salt Lake baseball team and the UVSC Wolverine were the referees.

After the halftime show, the mascots signed autographs for lines of clamoring children. School officials want to make the mascot challenge an annual event.

The win against the Bruins capped a weeklong celebration that included such activities as a pre-game bash, an all-night party and dance and a banquet to honor distinguished alumni.

"It was a huge success," said student-body president Steve Beck about the fifth annual Homecoming event. "It's growing in popularity."

Former UVSC President Wilson W. Sorensen was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for heading the school for 37 years.
