Voters in a special election have approved by a lopsided margin the construction of a multipurpose senior citizen center as the replacement for one described as "largely inadequate."

The bond issue will raise $200,000 of the estimated $500,000 cost of the new facility. The bonds will be paid off by a fee of $1 per month on residents' general utility bills. That fee is expected to raise $15,000 a year so that the bonds can be paid off in 20 years.

Where will the remaining $300,000 come from? Since the facility will be serving several communities, the city hopes to obtain state and federal grants, private contributions and financial help from Sanpete County.

The proposed center will include multipurpose, game, exercise and craft rooms, as well as a kitchen, director's office, vestibule, storage and rest rooms.

And future additions to the facility could include a mini convention center and an indoor swim-ming pool.

Mayor Ray Christensen said that the new center will draw on an area that contains about 400 senior citizens.

The election had 204 voting in favor of the bond issue and 75 against.
