The Davis County Commission awarded the contract for the new Davis County Work Release Center on Wednesday.

According to John Kearns of Stacey Enterprises Inc., work will begin in mid-March and finish by early December. Stacey Enterprises, a company based in Ogden, was awarded the contract after making the low bid of $1,468,000.The 27,000-square-foot building will house 120 minimum-security inmates. The building is located in the Farmington courts and prison complex west of I-15.

The work release center will also house some federal inmates because the project is funded by a federal grant. Law enforcement officials said it will help relieve pressure on the nearly full county prison, whose population has increased, partially because of an unexpected increase in drunken-driving arrests.

The project will be a relatively small one for Stacey Enterprises, Kearns said. Larger projects for Stacey have included a recently opened theater in Layton and a soon-to-be-opened 14-screen theater in Ogden.
