An East Central City man has been charged in connection with a series of burglaries at two LDS churches in January and February.
The man, 21, told police he was "a participant" in four burglaries at two LDS chapels at 1150 E. Yale Ave. (1080 South) and 2005 S. 900 East, according to 3rd District Court charges filed Friday. The man also said he was "willing to pay for any of the stolen items, as well as restitution."According to the charges, someone broke into the Yale Avenue church on Jan. 16, Jan. 28 and Feb. 13, and stole several items, including a TV and VCR. Damage caused to the property during the three break-ins totaled more than $3,000.
On Jan. 30, someone also broke into the 900 East meetinghouse and damaged five rooms, causing more than $2,000 in damage, the charges state. During the break-in, someone drew a black swastika on a glass window.
The man has been charged with four counts of burglary and four counts of criminal mischief, third-degree felonies, and two counts of theft, class A and class B misdemeanors. The man is being held at the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
