Firefighters put out a fire in a Central City apartment before it could spread to other units Friday night.

The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment on the top floor of the three-story building, 279 S. 700 East. It destroyed the kitchen and caused smoke damage to much of the building, said Salt Lake Fire Capt. Devin Villa. The blaze, which started at 9:30 p.m., caused $25,000 in damage. Nobody was in the apartment, and firefighters evacuated residents before anybody was injured.

Investigators said the fire was caused by food left cooking on the stove while the women who lived in the unit went to pick up her boyfriend. Residents were allowed to return to their apartments.
