Erma Gwendolyn Johnston Christensen, age 87, died of pneumonia in Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Center, Thursday, March 26, 1998.

Born January 20, 1911, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Harry B. and Martha Balmforth Johnston. Married Edwin Rushton Christensen on June 26, 1937, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Erma grew up in both Salt Lake City and Seattle and was active in the Salt Lake 10th Ward Young Women's MIA, particularly in dramatic and musical programs, lending her fine alto voice and musicianship to ward and stake productions. She graduated from East High School in 1928 and later from LDS Business College. She grew up in both Salt Lake City and Seattle with her beloved two sisters and five brothers. In addition to being a loving mother to three children, she was a caring and generous neighbor and friend. She contributed to the community through a lifetime of church work in Edgehill Ward, using her secretarial skills for the State of Utah and various businesses, singing in numerous choruses, serving a term as a member of the Utah State Board of Education, and speaking and writing for conservative causes.Survived by daughter, Julie (Richard) Cummings, Salt Lake City; two sons, Edwin R., Murray, and Alan Dane (Sherri), Centerville; five grandchildren, Mary Candace, Esther Ann, James Rushton, Sarah and Nathan; two brothers, Richard W. Johnston, Sacramento, CA, and Charles T. Johnston, Florence, OR. Preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, and four brothers.

Friends may visit with the family at Holbrook Mortuary, 2351 South 2300 East, Monday eveni ng March 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday, March 31, for one hour prior to a brief funeral service beginning at 1 p.m., and during which we will share memories of Erma.
