Fremont High School students have passed their goal of raising $25,000 toward installation of safety arms at a dangerous railroad crossing.
The fund-raising campaign was born in tragedy: Nathan Phillips, 16, and Tyson Murray, 15, died in a June crash after Phillips pulled out in front of a train at the crossing Plain City.Utah Department of Transportation representatives told the students that crossing arms would cost about $250,000, and that if they could raise 10 percent of the money, the project might become a higher priority.
Nine months after the accident, Kids for Safer Crossings sponsored a spaghetti dinner and auction that brought in $12,000, pushing their bank account to $27,700.
More than 400 area residents participated, their arms loaded with more donations for the auction and more checks for the charity.
