David Jackson, who announced last month that he was leaving the University of Utah, is returning home to resume his basketball career.

The Portland native will play for the University of Oregon in Eugene, which is two hours south of Portland. Ernie Kent, who just completed his first year as the Ducks' coach, received the paperwork from Jackson Tuesday.Jackson, who was unhappy with the coaching style of Ute coach Rick Majerus, also considered the University of Washington.

"I like to get out on the open floor - that's more my game," Jackson told the Deseret News when he announced his decision to leave Utah.

"Here, we were trying to slow it down and I wasn't being called upon to do the things I can do."

Jackson played in all but two games this year, when he was injured, and averaged 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds. The previous year he had almost identical stats with 3.4 points and 1.5 rebounds. Most of his points came from 3-point range where he was a 42 percent shooter over two years.

Under NCAA rules, Jackson will have to sit out a year and will be a junior for the 1999-2000 season.
