The eight steadfast members of the Western Athletic Conference are considering legal action against the eight who plan to break away next year.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson said Wednesday the presidents of the University of Hawaii and the seven other remaining schools have directed him to hire a law firm to review their legal rights.UH President Kenneth Mortimer said the schools need to take actions necessary to protect their rights.

Those schools remaining in the WAC fear the loss of potential bowl and television revenues.

Possible legal action could be based on arguments of breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duties.

Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, Nevada-Las Vegas, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming announced last month that they will leave the WAC and form their own conference June 30, 1999.

Hawaii, Fresno State, Rice, San Jose State, Southern Methodist, Texas Christian, Texas-El Paso and Tulsa have decided to stay in the WAC.
