The new Bingham Creek Library in West Jordan will be open for public use Monday, July 6. A grand opening ceremony is planned at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11.

A delay may be encountered in the delivery of some furniture for the new 19,000 square-foot structure, being built at 4834 W. 9000 South. But that will not postpone activities being planned, county library system officials say.Library System Director Eileen B. Longsworth gave a report on the library during a recent County Library Board meeting at Magna Library.

"We are just in the midst of finalizing a beautiful building," Longsworth told the board.

Board chairwoman Lohra Miller said she had recently visited the new library, where a "spectacular" view will be available from every window. Library patrons will even have a terrific view of the Kennecott mine from the library, Longsworth said.

Since the board meeting, computers, telephone lines, data phone lines and book stacks and other shelving have been or are being installed. As of Monday carpeting is nearly all laid.

Longsworth said the library system has been purchasing books for the past 18 months for the library, which will contain approximately 85,000 items, including books, videotapes, compact discs, CD-ROMs and magazines.

On June 8 the library began receiving materials for use on the opening day. Materials will continue to be delivered through this week, according to Susan Hamada, who has been named manager of the new library.

Most of the 22-member library staff has been hired. Other administrators at Bingham Creek Library include Anna Zanarini, assistant manager, and Carolyn Klatt, electronic resources librarian.

Library users will have access to 22 computer terminals with Internet access. The Bingham Creek Library will offer the library system's online catalog in a Windows version, called PAC for Windows, which will replace the text-only catalog available in the past.

Also, the new library will make available at least one PC with access to The Library Channel, featuring select Internet sites chosen by librarians for their endurance, quality and accuracy.

MHTN Architects Inc., Salt Lake City, designed the Bingham Creek Library, CRC Construction is the prime contractor of the facility, located on five acres of property at 8892 W. 4800 West.

Longsworth said the total cost for the library will be "just under $3 million."
