Marie Virginia "Dinny" Mickal Abaunza, born April 11, 1945 at Stewart Field, New York, died Monday, June 15, 1998 of injuries received in an automobile accident earlier that day near Heber City, Utah.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Virgina Abaunza, of Salt Lake City; her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Abe Mickal, of New Orleans; sisters, Annette Mickal Adler, of New Orleans; and Joanne Mickal Kinney, of Pass Christian, Mississippi; a brother, Schaffer Mickal, of New Orleans. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Abaunza in 1996.Marie Virginia grew up in New Orleans where she attended the Academy of Sacred Heart. After graduating from Duke University she taught school in Switzerland for two years. She was a resident of Salt Lake City since 1973.
Dinny was an active member of the Roman Catholic community of St. Catherine of Sienna Newman Center at the University of Utah. For the past several years she directed and taught classes in the local program of the Institute of Christian Ministries, an ecumenical healing prayer ministry founded in Seattle in 1977. She served as the alumni representative for Duke University in Utah, and also made significant contributions as an officer and leader in the Girl Scouts Utah Council.
She was employed at the University of Utah Medical Center in the Department of Medical Informatics as a Senior Research Administrator and adjunct faculty, teaching classes in scientific writing.
Funeral arrangements are being carried out by Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary. Service will be held at the Newman Center, 170 South University Street, at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18th. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Institute of Christian Ministries at the Newman Center.
