Agnes Mabel Poulton Woodbury, 89, passed away on June 13, 1998.
She was born March 15, 1909, in Salt Lake City, UT. She was the daughter of Clarence William and Annie Poulton. She was educated in the Salt Lake schools. She married Melvin L. Woodbury Oct. 28, 1933, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.Her husband was very active in the real estate and mortgage business. She became active in the real estate auxiliary, being secretary and treasurer of the Salt Lake Board, then president of the State Auxiliary. She, along with Mrs. Viola Crow, taught sewing and dress-making to teenagers for 11 years. The classes were held each summer at ZCMI. Many of the students won national honors in sewing contests. She continued to work for ZCMI in many capacities for several years.
Agnes had a great love of music. She had the talent to compose much of the music she played and often accompanied people for vocal and instrumental selections. In her early days, Agnes often played in a dance band with her brother and others. Gifted to play the piano by ear, she often played for parties to the great delight of many. Agnes served as an organist in the Relief Society General Board Building.
Agnes had a great zest for life and was known for her sense of humor. She found enjoyment in almost everything.
She was very active in the LDS Church. She served as organist for the Sunday School for 21 years. She was in the presidency of the Relief Society and the Mutual in Colonial Hills Ward. She and her husband were dance directors for the LDS church and traveled over the state to instruct the couples and prepare them for competition at the summer festival. They loved dancing and helped to organize the Utah Bonneville Dancing Club.
She is survived by three children: Joan Cutler (Paul W.), of Riverton, UT; Barbara Benson (Russell G.), of Mesa, AZ; and Craig Woodbury, of Los Angeles, CA. Her survivors also include seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are: Keith, Brad Cutler, Sharon DuQuette (Eugene), Deborah, David, Michael, and Karla Benson. She is also survived by two sisters: Norma Peterson, of Escondido, CA; Blanche Varley, of Chico, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, in 1970, and more recently her brother, Russell.
Funeral services will be held Fri, June 19, 1998 at 12 noon, Colonial Hills Ward, 1455 South 1700 East, Salt Lake City, UT. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 18, 1998 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, UT where friends may call between 6 and 8 p.m., and again at the ward one hour prior to the services. Interment to follow in Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.
