The two-year grant will fund Bennett's efforts to identify a genetic mutation that predisposes people to schizophrenia, which would help diagnose and treat the disease. She has chosen three candidate genes to screen for mutations in the DNA of four individuals who have schizophrenia and two who are unaffected. The genes have not been previously screened by other researchers.Bennett earned her doctorate in molecular genetics from Texas A&M University in 1994. She joined the U. faculty in 1996.
