Several groups of Cubans came ashore in south Florida within hours of each other, and federal authorities said it was too early to determine whether the landings were coordinated or coincidental.

Fast boats dropped off Cubans on beaches from Key Biscayne to Miami Beach before dawn Tuesday. Hours later, the Coast Guard intercepted a small wooden boat bearing eight more Cubans five miles off Hallandale, just north of Miami.There were conflicting reports about how many Cubans reached shore. The Miami Herald reported 17 Cubans landed in five groups, not including the eight intercepted offshore. The Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale reported 10 landed in three groups.
