A sculpture of a golden eagle that will honor longtime West Valley residents Thayne and Lorraine Acord was dedicated Monday at the Acord Ice Center, 5353 W. 3100 South.

The eagle, which will fly over the entrance to the ice sheet, recalls the Golden Eagles professional hockey franchise the Acords purchased in 1974.After the old Salt Palace was torn down and the old Acord Ice Arena demolished, county commissioners decided to name the new county-funded ice sheet in West Valley posthumously after the Acords.

Rick Prazen, a local artist, was commissioned to sculpt the eagle.
