DeVon Beckstead Smith, 71, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998 due of complications from surgery.

Born July 12, 1926 in Preston, Idaho to Kenneth G. and Grace Beckstead Smith. Married Betty J. Nelson in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 23, 1948.Worked as a Meteorologist for the National Weather Service for 35 years, starting in Pocatello, Idaho. Received a bronze medal award for outstanding accomplishments in the field of radar meteorology and marine weather service in Sacramento, California and Salt Lake City.

Held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, including Bishopric and Elders Quorum. He was a kind and gentle man; a great husband, father, and grandfather. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Despite many health challenges, he always displayed a positive attitude. He will be greatly missed.

Survived by wife, Betty; four children: David D. (Sherry) Smith, Pamela D. (Glenn) Haws, Steven K. (Linda) Smith, Teri (Jeff) Neilson, and 17 grandchildren. Also survived by brother and sisters: Thora Hough, Kaysville, Utah; Norman Smith, and Lola Sweet, both of Livermore, California.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 20th at Noon at the South Cottonwood Stake Center, 1250 East 4800 South. Friends may call at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State, Murray, Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday at the church one hour prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawm Memorial Park.
