Andrew Howard Christensen died June 17, 1998 of natural causes.
Howard was born to Hans Christensen and Elisabeth Ann Thomson on August 29, 1908 in Manti Utah. He was reared in Ephraim, Sanpete County. He did well in school and earned money by working on his father's farm and in the Ephraim Canning Company. Howard graduated from Ephraim High School in 1926, where he played varsity football, and also from Snow College in 1928, where he also was on the starting team in football. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1930 with a Bachelor's degree in physics and then went to work for Bell Laboratories in New York City. He received a Master's Degree in Physics from Columbia University. He married Clara Dean Oliver on February 1, 1938. They moved from New York to New Jersey in 1941. During his 43 year tenure at Bell Laboratories, he was the author of 20 patents, mostly in the area of solid state physics. He was instrumental in developing the pioneering manufacturing techniques for the transistor, which have made possible the electronic age. He also recently authored a patent. Howard was a high priest in the LDS Church and also served in many church positions including elders quorum president, stake missionary, one of seven presidents of the New Jersey Stake Seventies quorum, and a temple worker in both the Washington and the Salt Lake Temples. He also served a leadership mission in the Liberty Stake.He is survived by his wife, Dean Christensen, his two sons, H. Kurt (Linda) Christensen of Wilmette, IL, and Dale O. (Sally) Christensen of Herndon, VA, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Eagle Gate Second Ward (corner of Third Avenue and A St). Friends may call on Friday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the services.
