An attorney for accused child molester Michael Doporto says her client may have been insane or had diminished mental capacity when he allegedly abused a young girl.

On Monday, attorney Mary C. Corporon filed a notice of intent to pursue an insanity defense in 2nd District Court here. She said she recently learned of some psychiatric problems Doporto suffered at the time of the alleged abuse.Corporon said Doporto is sane now.

In March, Doporto pleaded not guilty to six counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and two counts of sodomy of a child, all first-degree felonies, stemming from the alleged abuse of a 7-year-old relative.

Corporon and Assistant Attorney General Craig Barlow told 2nd District Judge Michael Allphin on Monday they are negotiating a possible plea bargain. Allphin has set a hearing for June 29.
