A man has been indicted on charges he smothered a baby whose death was misdiagnosed by a pathologist accused of botching and falsifying dozens of autopsy reports in the 1980s.
Discredited pathologist Ralph Erdmann had ruled that the 14-month-old boy died of pneumonia in 1989.But a grand jury on Wednesday indicted David Earl Johnson Jr., 36, the former live-in boyfriend of the baby's mother, on charges he smothered Anthony Lynn Culifer with a pillow because he couldn't stop him from crying.
Witnesses came forward in February saying the baby had been killed, prompting officials to exhume the body for a second autopsy.
